I despise this growing phenomenon so much that I wrote a whole novel about it. It’s called Internet Kill Switch, and one of the major themes is the effect a worldwide Internet outage would have on people — everyone, but younger folks especially, who struggle with this more than old codgers like me who didn’t grow up with smartphones.
It’s terrifying to see how much people are reliant on immediate feedback from posting online. Validation, in the form of likes and hearts and comments, has become the most important thing in so many folks’ lives.
